YOGA INSTRUCTORS

maggie mae anderson

Maggie was first introduced to yoga through a book her father gave her when she was 13. Unable to truly digest the text, she followed along with the pictures and a seed was planted. While in massage school, she studied yoga intensely with an Iyengar teacher and later received her teacher training through Sivananda. In her gentle classes she focuses on being as therapeutic as possible, paying special attention to alignment, spending extra time in the postures to allow for deep releases, and providing hands on assists. She has been teaching in the Stowe area for 10 years and strives to make her classes a healing experience that is accessible to everyone.

My life has taken a quiet and disciplined turn since I made the personal decision to follow the yogic path. Compassion for all living beings along with studying the eight limbs of yoga has changed how I approach each moment of the day. I deeply enjoy the art of yoga, teaching asana or postures and posture flow from a body who has suffered many injuries over many years. My right hip replacement is always there to remind me of my limits and reminds me to be forever grateful for having an injury that modern medicine has an answer to. How many of us have injuries where chronic pain defines our day. I do believe that working and learning the right postures and good posture movement can provide a boost to our daily lives. My dream or goal would be for anyone who is in my class to find their own version of the postures. If you can get in the textbook posture great if you are in your version great. What is most important to me is once you’re in the posture you relax and quiet the mind in order for you to connect with your divine self. My training with Dharma Mittra has included both a 200 hour and 500 hour training modules. I live in Stowe Vermont with my beautiful wife, Judith, who lives, teaches and functions as a yogi; how fortunate am I?

I found yoga about 10 years ago through a phys ed requirement in college. Throughout the next 5 or so years I dabbled in the practice. It wasn’t until I graduated college in 2006 that I was reunited with my mat in a much more intimate way.

I practiced 5 days a week, various styles like Power Vinyasa, Forrest, Vinyasa Flow, and Ashtanga. The more I practiced, the more interested I became in doing a teacher training. My intention was not to become a teacher, but to immerse myself deeper into the transformation that was beginning to take shape. This person that I was becoming, I liked. Soon I realized, that it wasn’t that I was becoming something I wasn’t already, the yoga just revealed to me the beauty and strength that already existed, inherent in my own being.

My training took place at Nosara Yoga Institute in January of 2007 with Don and Amba Stapleton. After receiving my 200 hour Interdisciplinary Teacher Training Certificate, I decided that I wanted to share with others what the practice had and continues to show me. A note about Interdisciplinary Yoga: it is a vinyasa based (linking breath and movement) practice that draws from different disciplines of yoga and meditation where the true teacher in the practice is your own experience.

Since my 200 hour training I have also completed a month long intensive with Ana Forrest; immersions with Shiva Rea and Coral Brown in Prana Flow Yoga; immersions with Anne Greene and Todd Norian in Anusara Yoga. I have also done workshops with Richard Freeman, David Swenson, Alanna Kaivalya and the Yogaslackers. My teaching style is a vinyasa flow based practice that infuses wisdom from all these disciplines using the breath as the guiding force to move and create space in the body. Coupled with a strong emphasis on physical alignment, I teach with compassion and encouragement to listen to the wisdom of your body.
